Ruthie's Process...
Do I even have one? Ha! Yes, sort of. My process is... make what I feel. In the time line I feel it in. I am not as invested in the final product, as much as II am invested in the process. Every piece you see will probably come with a little statement, a name, and fun fact about the process of making it. I hope you, dear human, can also be inspired to relish your process over product.
1. Inspiration Spark!
I need a spark. I need something new, shiny, weird, joyful, or even something wildly uncomfortable to ignite the inspiration.
Friction is such an important aspect of ceramics. Working to notice friction in our own daily lives can often lead to fabulously creative problem solving, or ridiculous new ideas of how to make something differently.
2. Making
Throwing, hand building, carving, trimming...
This stage is my favorite! I love playing in the wet mud, checking on the delicate drying process, and relishing slow pace this process demands.
3. Firing
Bisque firing, glaze firing, praying to the Kiln Gods...
I am lucky enough to work with a local studio called The Clay Pit for my firing services! Click on the button below to learn more about their fabulous community!
4. Glazing and Finishing
This is, ironically. my least favorite part.
Which also means it's my biggest growth edge. I am challenged everyday by my lived experience not meeting my internal expectations. Even when those expectations aren't rooted in reality!
Glaze challenges me everyday to be fluid. Allow room for "mistakes"...because at the end of the day, don't we learn more from our failures than our successes?
